La atolondrada Betty Barrett (Betty Garrett) confunde al masajista Jack Spratt (Red Skelton) con Jos\u00e9 O\u2019Rourke (Ricardo Montalban), el capit\u00e1n del equipo de polo de Am\u00e9rica el Sur. Spratt mantiene el equ\u00edvoco, pero la situaci\u00f3n se complica cuando se enamoran. Mientras tanto, la hermana mayor de Betty, Eve (Esther Williams), campeona de nataci\u00f3n que vende trajes de ba\u00f1o asociada con Joe Backett (Keenan Wynn), se teme que Betty sufra un desenga\u00f1o cuando Jos\u00e9 regrese a Am\u00e9rica del Sur, as\u00ed que se las ingenia para conocer al aut\u00e9ntico O\u2019Rourke, y pronto surgir\u00e1 tambi\u00e9n el amor entre los dos. En paralelo a esta historia de confusi\u00f3n de identidades se desarrolla una subtrama en la que un g\u00e1nster (Ted de Corsia) y su torpe gorila (Mike Mazurki) planean capturar a O\u2019Rourke antes del gran partido de polo para ganar una apuesta. Dirigida con oficio por Edward Buzzell (Una tarde en el circo, Los hermanos Marx en el Oeste)<\/em>, La hija de Neptuno<\/em> destaca sobre todo por los n\u00fameros musicales (el tema \u201cBaby, It’s Cold Outside\u201d, compuesto por Frank Loesser, gan\u00f3 el Oscar\u00ae a la Mejor Canci\u00f3n en 1959) y por la brillantez de los espect\u00e1culos de nataci\u00f3n sincronizada que tanta fama reportaron a Esther Williams.
