La pel\u00edcula se llev\u00f3 el Le\u00f3n de Oro en el Festival de Venecia de 1954, por delante de otras pel\u00edculas m\u00edticas como \u2018Senso\u2019 de Visconti, \u2018La strada\u2019 de Fellini o \u2018Los siete samurais\u2019 de Kurosawa. Dos familias nobles de la Verona del siglo XIV, Montesco y Capuleto, se encuentran en discordia desde muchos a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s. Romeo (Laurence Harvey), hijo de Montesco, se enamora de Julieta (Susan Shentall), hija \u00fanica de los Capuleto,\u00a0 quien ingenuamente corresponde a este amor cas\u00e1ndose en secreto con ayuda de Fray Lorenzo (Mervyn Johns). El mismo d\u00eda de la ceremonia, Romeo reta a Teobaldo para vengar la muerte de su mejor amigo Mercurio (Ubaldo Zollo). El Pr\u00edncipe de Verona (Giovanni Rota) condena a Romeo al destierro o a la muerte. Romeo huye a Mantua despu\u00e9s de jurar a Julieta su amor.
