M-G-M hab\u00eda buscado durante mucho tiempo a la actriz id\u00f3nea para el papel estelar de esta producci\u00f3n de lujo, y tras seleccionar primero a Greer Garson y reemplazarla por la ganadora* de un Oscar\u00ae Deborah Kerr (que aparece tambi\u00e9n en la pel\u00edcula interpretando a Catherine), se decant\u00f3 finalmente por Jean Simmons, casi una reci\u00e9n llegada al cine. La elecci\u00f3n del marido de la actriz en la vida real, Stewart Granger, para encarnar a su amante en la pel\u00edcula aseguraba la rom\u00e1ntica complicidad de la pareja protagonista.
