La acci\u00f3n transcurre 500 a\u00f1os antes de Cristo. Cuando el poderoso rey Asuero (Richard Egan), soberano de Persia, regresa a su pa\u00eds despu\u00e9s de conquistar Egipto, descubre que su esposa Vashti (Daniela Rocca) le ha traicionado. Pero lo que no sospecha es que Am\u00e1n (Sergio Fantoni), su primer ministro, planea arrebatarle la corona; y para llevar a cabo sus prop\u00f3sitos, fingiendo lealtad al monarca, le aconseja elegir una nueva. Entre las candidatas se encuentra la bella Esther (Joan Collins), una muchacha jud\u00eda. En este trance, Asuero s\u00f3lo puede contar con la fidelidad de su viejo consejero Mordecai (Denis O\u2019Dea).<\/p>\n

Dirigida con su agilidad narrativa habitual por el maestro Raoul Walsh (Murieron con las botas puestas, Al rojo vivo, El \u00faltimo refugio), esta coproducci\u00f3n italo-estadounidense se inscribe en el g\u00e9nero b\u00edblico que tanto prolifer\u00f3 a finales de los a\u00f1os cincuenta y primeros sesenta y que produjo pel\u00edculas, si no muy fieles a las Sagradas Escrituras (en este caso el Libro de Esther), casi siempre llenas de encanto y espectacularidad.
